Let’s Go Fishing Launches Local Chapter

From the summit of Rib Mountain to the depths of Lake Wausau, Marathon County is gifted with an abundance of natural resources. But for many residents – particularly seniors and individuals with disabilities – mobility challenges, health limitations, transportation issues or even financial constraints may prevent them from fully enjoying the outdoors and natural beauty of the region.

There is a growing effort to break some of those barriers, though, as the Minnesota-based nonprofit Let’s Go Fishing plans to open access to Wausau’s welcoming waters by establishing a local chapter this summer.

“We have such a resource here with Lake Wausau, it’s just a perfect spot for it and with the surrounding population base here, it should be just a really great fit,” said Bernie Lakus, president of the new Wausau area chapter of Let’s Go Fishing.

Nonprofit Let’s Go Fishing starts new chapter in Wausau

WAUSAU, Wis. (WJFW) — While the Northwoods has many big lakes and rivers, but not everyone has the means to set sail and get out on the water.

Let’s Go Fishing is a nonprofit organization that looks to change that. Let’s Go Fishing has a chapter in Rhinelander, but they have always had long term plans for expansion. Some people who are interested in starting a new group in Wausau met Monday to discuss plans for beginning the new chapter next year.

It was at the Marathon County Library in Wausau where they met to start discussion on the creation of a Wausau chapter of Let’s Go Fishing. Let’s Go Fishing started in 2002 in Minnesota as a way to get people who may not have means to get outside out the boat.

“I got very excited because of the opportunity to bring it to the Wausau area and the resources that we have here with Lake Wausau and the surrounding communities and the population,” said Bernie Lakus, the first president of the Wausau chapter.
